3DBioFibR to scale biopolymer fiber production

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2025-06-09 15:46:34 – Nova Scotia

3DBioFibR, a company based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, has raised $3 million through an equity funding round. This follows several newly signed paid partnerships and collaborations across industries. The company uses a special dry-spinning technology that can produce fibres from a variety of natural polymers. These fibres are up to three times stronger than natural tissue.

Compared to traditional methods like wet spinning or electrospinning, 3DBioFibR’s process is far more efficient—able to produce materials at over 3,600 times the usual scale. The resulting fibres are also more consistent in quality and less expensive to make. These features make the fibres well-suited for demanding applications where strength, safety, or large-scale production is critical.

“This investment supports the next stage of our growth,” said Kevin Sullivan, CEO of 3DBioFibR. “It allows us to keep up with the needs of our partners and to qualify as a trusted supplier for medical and therapeutic uses. Getting ISO 13485 certification is an important milestone for producing medical-grade fibres consistently and at scale. We’re eager to expand our reach in industries that need stronger, more eco-friendly materials.”

Patrick Keefe, general partner at Build Ventures, added, “3DBioFibR has achieved something remarkable by turning advanced biomaterial science into real business success. They’ve formed partnerships with major companies around the world and developed a manufacturing system that delivers fibres at a scale and quality unmatched in the market. This team is leading the way in biopolymer fibre production, and we’re proud to support their progress.”
