Mexico is a major player in textiles advantageous to its proximity to USA. Although it is not a major producer or exporter of fibre/filament, it is a major consumer and thus a major importer. It domestic fibre/filament is very small just; 0.5% of global production. It has modest production capacities of most manmade fibre/filament, excepting viscose. In 2008, it ranked sixteenth in global production, twenty fourth in export, but ninth in imports and fourteenth in consumption. It produced 311,000 tons of fibre/filament of which a major portion is of cotton. It grows cotton over 100 hectares of land. Production of manmade fibre/filament totaled 186,000 tons while cotton pro-duction was at 125,000 tons accounting for 0.5% of World’s production. Its major manmade textile is polyester filament yarn. In consumption, Mexico ranked ninth in acrylic and cotton consumption.
