Meta has signed an agreement with polymer recycling company MacroCycle Technologies to purchase environmental attribute certificates (EACs) linked to recycled PET production. MacroCycle’s SolvoGenesis process uses solvents to dissolve and purify PET from textile and packaging waste while preserving the polymer chain.
MacroCycle has also developed MacroTex, a 100% polyester textile made from upcycled clothing, while its process can preserve and valorise cotton and elastane components in blended textile waste. The partnership comes as Meta works towards its goal of net-zero emissions by 2030 and seeks to address emissions associated with materials across its supply chain.
The company says the technology can process mixed, blended and contaminated waste streams and requires 80% less energy than conventional PET production.
According to MacroCycle, the planned facility could also contribute to domestic recycled PET capacity in the US, where the company says reliance on imported virgin and recycled PET remains significant. Meta said its procurement could help support the development of a broader market for lower-carbon plastics.
