Woolchemy, Lenzing create wool-based layer for hygiene products

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2026-08-20 13:59:36 – Austria

Woolchemy and Lenzing are collaborating on a new Acquisition and Distribution Layer (ADL) for hygiene products that combines New Zealand wool with wood-based VEOCEL Lyocell fibers. The development aims to provide a more renewable alternative to fossil-based materials commonly used in products such as diapers and feminine hygiene products.

The patented neweFlex ADL combines Woolchemy’s hygiene-grade wool with VEOCEL Lyocell fibers made using Lenzing’s Lyocell Dry technology. The material is designed for use in disposable hygiene products while providing the moisture management and performance needed for everyday applications.

According to Woolchemy, neweFlex offers several properties, including fast liquid absorption, low rewet, breathability, temperature regulation and odour control. Independent testing cited by the company found that products made with the material maintained a warmer and more stable microclimate while having 10% lower humidity compared with a polypropylene alternative. Another study found that surfaces using the material were three to 14 times drier than those using other bio-based alternatives.

Lenzing’s VEOCEL Lyocell fibers are made from renewable wood sources and are developed for nonwoven applications. The company’s Lyocell Dry technology provides properties that help control liquid in products such as diapers and sanitary pads.
