At the recent Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), held in London from May 20–22, British furniture brand SCP introduced its newest line of furniture pieces that are completely foam-free and made using only natural, eco-friendly materials.
Since the 1950s, petrochemical foams have been widely used in furniture making. However, they contain harmful chemicals and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) over time. In the UK, these foams also need an added chemical fire retardant treatment, which is not required for SCP’s foam-free designs.
SCP now uses entirely natural and sustainable materials in all its handmade products, crafted at its workshop in Norfolk. These materials are carefully chosen to offer both comfort and long-lasting quality. The fillings include burlap, a strong fabric made from jute or hemp, latex-sprayed coconut fibres, recycled wool felts, natural latex, wool of varying densities, and certified cruelty-free duck and goose feathers. These fillings are paired with natural upholstery fabrics and responsibly sourced wood that is FSC certified.
