BFC reveals the three 'Changemakers' prize winners

YarnsandFibers News Bureau 2021-09-13 11:32:16 – United Kingdom

The recipients of the British Fashion Council's inaugural BFC Changemakers Prize in association with Swarovski are Glass Onion creator John Hickling, hairstylist Cyndia Harvey, and London Embroidery Studio owner Andrew Kenny.

The British Fashion Council notes that the award honors the fashion industry's unsung heroes who "go above and beyond to strive for good change, make great contributions, and inspire others on their journey."

Each winner symbolizes one of the Institute of Positive Fashion's (IPF) three pillars: environment, people, and community, and craftsmanship.

John Hickling, the founder of Glass Onion, a vintage and remade clothing store in South Yorkshire, was honored for his environmental efforts. Each week, Glass Onion sorts and classifies 15 tonnes of old clothing, and each month, it ‘remakes' 12,000 antique garments.

Cyndia Harvey, a hairstylist, was honored in the people pillar for her "unique vision for inclusive beauty." Harvey is a supporter of Black women and their hair, and the director of the thought-provoking film "This Hair of Mine," which was released in 2017.

The community and craftsmanship award went to Andrew Kenny, owner of the London Embroidery Studio in East London, for using "old skills to develop new creative approaches with cutting edge embroidery machines."

All three winners will get a monetary award of £7,500, as well as a bespoke mentoring package led by industry experts, as well as BFC and Swarovski support to continue their work.

Caroline Rush, BFC chief executive, said that what is so exciting about the BFC Changemakers Prize in Partnership with Swarovski is the chance to provide these future leaders with the assistance and recognition to continue to fire their dreams.

She added that their objective is to assist them in continuing to realize their dreams for the business by assisting them with their outstanding job. Swarovski is devoted to celebrating individuals in the creative sectors who have the unique potential to ignite aspirations, create good change, and inspire others on their journey as a brand and partner for the BFC Changemakers Prize. They can't wait to see all of their Changemakers light up the room.
