With Malaysia signing the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA), the textile industry players can now collaborate with the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) to attract investments from TPPA countries to set up factories here, said Batik manufacturer Cliff Ink Sdn Bhd Managing Director Michelle Lau Sook Yee.

TPPA will not only provide greater market access for exporters, but potentially create spin-off effects such as the creation of new industries.

The Walmart experts suggestion to transfer grey fabrics directly from powerloom weaving units to textile dyeing and printing mills in order to ease traffic congestion in the two square kilometre area on Ring Road has been disregarded by the member of Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association (FOSTTA).

According to FOSTTA members, only 10 percent of the textile traders have their warehouses located in the peripherial areas of the city, while most of the small traders have no option but to stock the fabric in their shops and godowns in the markets.

The Centre has notified certain changes in the all industry rates of duty drawback effective from 11th Feb 2016. These changes announced by the Centre in DBK scheme will help boost exports.

New entries in the drawback schedule have been created for cotton yarns mixed with Man Made Fibre (MMF) - both grey and dyed. It has also increased the drawback caps in the case of certain MMF fabrics. This change was welcomed by the Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council (Texprocil).

ASF prices steady amid moderate demand in Asia

In China, medium-length staple fiber prices were stable while cotton-type staple rolled over in the last week of January.

Jilin Chemical Fiber maintained its list prices for January with 1.5D and 3D medium-length at US$2.00-2.01 a kg, while tow was at US$2.09 a kg and top at US$2.24 a kg.

Taiwan origin 3D bright ASF tow prices rolled over at US$1.60-1.70 a kg while offers for regular products were partially at US$1.56-1.60 a kg in China.

Acrylonitrile price moves up on tight availability in Asia

Asian acrylonitrile marker, the CFR Far East Asia and Southeast Asia partially regained US$20 a in the last week of January.

In China, offers for offshore cargoes were stable at US$1,000-1,050 a ton CFR China after falling sharply by US$150 previous week. In East China, domestic prices stood at 7,700-7,900 Yuan a ton.

Acrylonitrile prices moved up further in Asia on tight availability and firmer Chinese market. However, thin spot activity due to Chinese holidays limited the rise while plants ran at reduced rates.
