Textile exporters hit hard by unfavourable currency movement

Indian textile exporters have been facing subdued demand trends over the past few years in the key textile consuming regions of the US and EU which accounts for a majority of exports from India as well as intense competitive pressures from nations such as Bangladesh and Vietnam due to high raw material prices in the past six to nine month, which has been aggravated by unfavourable currency movements as well as recent revision in duty drawback rates have only added to their woes.

Recently, e-commerce giant Amazon signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Telangana Department of Handlooms and Textiles to help handloom clusters in Warangal, Pochampally etc. As the number of weavers has increased over the years but the sales haven’t gone up proportionally.

Trading activity remained firm at cotton market as buyers bought better grades of lint on higher than market physical prices during trading session in Punjab and Sindh stations, keeping sellers in the driving seat.

Buyers made deals in better and second grade of cotton on shrinking stocks. Spinners bought second grade of lint at around Rs 6,500-Rs 6,525 per maund, in parts of Sindh and Punjab stations.

This fiscal year, exports of textile machinery, equipment for spinning, spinning accessories, weaving preparatory and of other accessories likely to see an increase in the range of about 15 to 20 percent, after a year of marginal growth due to tepid international demand in 2016-2017.

S. Chakraborty, secretary for the Textile Machinery Manufacturer’s Association, said that the international market did not see much growth last year. Further, for exports to grow in a particular market, the manufacturers needed to have local facilities to provide after sales and service support.

JR Group UK, is all set to launch a new £9 million project in Bradford later this month. The group is into manufacturing, recycling and trading in textiles for over 160 years. The project, set over 6.5 acres, comprises a combination of machinery housed in a purpose-built building covering 56,000 sq ft, offices and a distribution centre.

The building work for phase one completed by mid-September and work has already commenced on phase two with a combined cost of over £5 million.
