The Gujarat state government has issued a notification under the Gujarat Goods and Service Tax Act, 2017 exempting all the textile fabric from generating the e-way bill for intra-city and intra-state movement. The rule will come into force from February 1, which is welcomed by the traders in the country's largest man-made fabric (MMF) wholesale market Surat on Monday.

However, the intra-city and intra-state movement of yarn, which is the basic raw material for the powerloom sector, will have to generate e-way bill along with other 18 items described in the notification.

Representatives of textile industry have come forward to register their "disappointment" with the government for ignoring the calls of an industry which has been "one of the most impacted by GST". After government last week announced the enhancement of duty drawback rates to be effective from January 25, 2018. The notification just mentions wool items which is a very insignificant part of the textile industry. There is nothing on textiles.

Dull trading was seen at the Karachi Cotton Exchange on Saturday, while spot rates continued to remain unchanged at Rs7,500/maund (37.324kg) and Rs8,038/40kg.

Ex-Karachi rates also remained unchanged at Rs7,645/maund and Rs8,193/40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

A total of four transactions were recorded of around 2,500 bales only at a price of Rs6,900 to Rs7,800/maund. Of these, 1,000 bales each were recorded from Rahimyar Khan and Haroonabad, 440 bales from Mianwali and 800 bales were traded from DG Khan.
