Uzbekistan produced 26,000 tonnes of high quality cocoons this season

Expansion of silkworm mulberry plantations, strengthening of feeding base, attraction of qualified professionals made in possible for the Uzbekistan silkworm breeders have produced over 26,000 tonnes of cocoons this season. The rate increased by 1,000 tons compared to last year, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.

Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management of Uzbekistan said that farmers bred 445,000 boxes of high yield silkworm eggs that had been adapted to local climatic conditions and 90% of yield was sold as high quality. Thus fully carried out their annual contractual obligations.

Silkworm breeders from Surkhandarya, Ferghana, Bukhara, Namangan, Kashkadarya, Navoi and Andijan regions were among the regions, which first executed contractual obligations.

In order to increase productivity and improve quality of cocoon, intense mulberry groves were planted on 1,100 hectares of land.

One ton of cocoon allows to produce 350 kgs of silk, 20,000 meters of adras and 13,000 meters of satin.

Cultivating silkworms for silk production is the second largest agricultural industry controlled by the Uzbek Government after cotton.
