Sparxell develops plant-based alternative to traditional dyeing methods

Sparxell is developing a plant-based alternative to traditional colouring methods and has introduced what it describes as the world’s first fully plant-based pigment, removing the need for petrochemicals in the process. This development was featured in a new documentary on Netflix, titled The Plastic Detox.

Unlike conventional dyes, which use synthetic chemicals to absorb light and create colour, Sparxell’s technology relies on cellulose-based structural colour. This method works by controlling how light is reflected. It is inspired by natural examples such as Morpho butterfly wings and peacock feathers, where colour is produced through microscopic structures rather than pigments.

The materials created using this approach are biodegradable, free from plastics and toxins, and can reduce water usage by up to 90% compared to traditional dyeing techniques.

Dr. Benjamin Droguet, founder and CEO of Sparxell, explained that the chemistry behind everyday colour can remain in the environment and build up in the human body. He added that the company is using nature-inspired methods to create safer and high-performing alternatives for the future.
