Södra to increase recycled content in OnceMore process

Södra has increased the number of used textiles in its OnceMore process by dissolving pulp to 20%. The OnceMore process incorporates cellulose from wood with fibres from discarded textiles to generate a pure, high-quality dissolving pulp that can be utilized to create apparel and textiles.

This technology was lashed in 2019 and utilized 3% recycled textile content the company is working towards a target of utilizing 50% recycled content.

Johannes Bogren, the Vice President of Södra Cell Bioproducts stated that OnceMore had the potential to shake up the fashion industry and will enable large volumes of utilized cotton and cotton-polyester blends to be converted into new clothing and textiles. He added that they were delighted with the process achieved so far.

The pulp is produced in Södra’s mill in Mörrum, Sweden.  The company is on track to increase its capacity to 25,000 tons of textile waste that can be added to the production of pulp by 2024.

Bogren stated that they received their RCS [Recycled Claim Standard] certificate in June, which was proof that they can offer products containing recycled textiles. He added that now they hope that the rest of the textile supply chain would follow suit to ensure the RCS-certified garments and other textile materials based on our OnceMore technology would soon be available in stores.
