Sferra announces acquisition of Brahms Mount

Sferra Fine Linens, Italian luxury home textiles supplier operating in Venice acquired Brahms Mount, an American textile designer, manufacturing mill and retailer. Sferra President Steve Schneider said that they are proud to have made this investment in the thriving manufacturing economy of Maine, where quintessential American-made ethos merges with artisanal craftsmanship in Brahms Mount.

For Sferra, it certainly represents a vertical expansion—giving them new manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. and increasing efficiencies for both companies.

Brahms Mount established in 1983 by local Maine artisans Claudia Brahms and Noel Mount utilizing antique shuttle looms to craft signature American textiles with all-natural cotton, linen, and wool fibers.

The company’s core products—designed and woven at their mill in Maine—feature throws, blankets, and linen towels. The Brahms Mount design tradition is steeped in classical, authentic Americana suffused with a distinctively modern style. Currently, it is the only mill weaving linen in North America.

In addition to the Brahms Mount collection, the firm creates and weaves custom and private label programs for retailers across the U.S., and operates a retail shop across from the world-renowned L.L. Bean shop in Freeport, Maine.

However, David Kaufman, previous owner and president of Brahms Mount, will stay with the company as director of business development as part of a decision to keep the companies’ identities separate.

Sferra’s intention is to allow Brahms Mount to continue to flourish and develop their American-made collection in keeping with the same standards of excellence they have established over the course of their 32-year history, Schneider said.

Their goal is to align the two companies as two distinct brands, and by so doing, they offer both respective retail customer bases more products which will resonate with their shared luxury consumer.

According to Kaufman, Brahms Mount will fit in well under the Sferra umbrella known for making the finest Italian-made linens. Brahms Mount is known for American-made luxury. They share the same core customers as Sferra and value the same quality attributes of pure, natural materials and artisanal craftsmanship — yet offers something uniquely different to their mix of products. Brahms Mount is a wonderful complement to their Italian-made line, and they are honored to join the Sferra family of luxury linens.
