“Re-born textiles” revamping discarded textile waste

A pair of denim and a cotton t-shirt take a huge amount of water for its production. When these are discarded they end up in landfills or incineration.Israel has come up with a new campaign “Re-born textiles” to tackle textile waste.

Viktoria Kanar, co-founder of Re-fresh Global, states that every year it costs around 150 million shekels to the state which corresponds to the five thousand tonnes of textile waste produced.

She mentions that currently, they don’t have a proper arrangement for collecting textile waste and using it effectively. Kanar adds that people are more inclined towards mega shopping events such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday; there is a need for them to become conscious and responsible for their consumption behavior. Refresh Global’s campaign ‘Re-born textile’ system works on three R’s -reuse, remake and recycle. Clothes in good condition are sent to the retail and the worn-out ones are sent to make new products in an automobile or industrial sector.

Re-born Textiles opened its first sorting location on December 3 at Kipod  Sustainability Centre in Kfar Saba, the first Israeli city to establish an urban center for the circular economy.
