Polartec launches fabrics made with plant-based nylon fiber

Polartec, a brand under Milliken & Company known for innovative textiles, has released an upgraded version of two of its legacy products. These fabrics, Polartec® Power Shield™ and Power Stretch™ Pro, now incorporate Biolon™, a plant-based nylon fiber and membrane that sets a new standard in sustainability for performance fabrics.

The challenge was to enhance technology already seen as top-tier in performance. Polartec tackled this by integrating Biolon™, described as a renewable, non-GMO plant-based nylon. It boasts a 50% lower carbon footprint compared to virgin Nylon 6,6, considered the gold standard in nylon. Biolon™ maintains properties close to Nylon 6,6, surpassing many recycled nylon alternatives.

Biolon™ has been integrated into Polartec’s staple products, specifically the Polartec® Power Shield™ and Power Stretch™ Pro fabrics. Around 45 to 48% of the nylon content in these fabrics comes from plant-based inputs, showcasing a significant move towards sustainability without compromising performance.

This innovation aligns with Polartec’s commitment to sustainability. The brand aims to increase recycled and bio-inputs across its range, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lessening the carbon footprint. Notably, Polartec emphasizes that the shift towards sustainability does not compromise functionality. According to Ramesh Kesh, Senior Vice President at Milliken & Company, leaving the world a better place is a shared responsibility. The launch of Biolon-based products represents a significant step in that journey.

Karen Beattie, Director of Product Management at Polartec, emphasizes sustainability as a core principle. The brand actively explores new fibers, adopts advanced manufacturing techniques, fosters innovation, and collaborates with partners to lead in creating high-performance textiles prioritizing environmental responsibility for a more sustainable future.
