Polartec expands eco-friendly weather protection fabrics

Polartec has recently enhanced its Power Shield range, a fabric technology first launched in 2022. This bio-based innovation set a new benchmark for sustainable weather protection, as Polartec continues to replace petroleum-based materials with renewable alternatives, all while improving fabric efficiency and performance.

According to Ramesh Kesh, Senior Vice President of Research, Sustainability, and Textile Development at Milliken, “The core of Polartec Power Shield’s breakthrough functionality lies in advancements in membrane technology. The monolithic membrane is a tough barrier against outside weather while effectively allowing moisture vapor to escape from the skin’s surface through molecular diffusion.”

Designed for challenging outdoor conditions, Power Shield Pro is an environmentally friendly shell fabric that is waterproof, breathable, windproof, and highly durable. Made with plant-based Biolon nylon, it reduces the carbon footprint by up to 50% compared to traditional Nylon-6,6, without affecting food sources.

For athletes and active users seeking weather protection without sacrificing eco-consciousness, Polartec offers the flexible Power Shield RPM fabric. This recycled material is waterproof, breathable, and stretchable, ideal for runners, cyclists, and golfers. It combines 10k mm water resistance with 20k g/m²/24hrs breathability, balancing protection and comfort.

Power Shield RPM utilizes 100% recycled polyester fibers and supports circular processes, minimizing environmental impact. This fabric is designed for resilience, keeping wearers comfortable during intense outdoor activities while maintaining durability over time.

Adopters of Power Shield RPM include the MAGIC Jacket from Santini and the Ultra Rain Cape from Castelli. The Santini MAGIC jacket, featuring a lightweight, recycled 2-layer polyester fabric, offers top-tier waterproofing, breathability, and stretch comfort. Weighing just 155 grams in a medium size, it is a practical and portable option for all-weather protection.
