Pakistani ginners demand ban on cotton and yarn import from India

The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) has demanded complete ban on the import of cotton lint and yarn from India through Wahga border. The move comes at a time when the prime ministers of both the countries are in discussion to improve trade relation between the two nations.

The Central Executive Committee (CEC) in a meeting chaired by Mukhtar Ahmed Khan Baloch has urged the government to impose a complete ban. It has also constituted an international liaison committee to develop interaction with international associations and to annex the membership of International Cotton Association (ICA).

The CEC also urged the commerce minister to ensure the payment of outstanding amount from textile sector immediately which were withheld by the textile millers. The Ministry, according to CEC, has called the record of withholding tax deducted by the textile millers at the rate of one percent at the time of purchasing the cotton lint.

Meanwhile cotton sowing has been delayed due to incessant rains in cotton growing areas and as of 10 May area sowing was 25 per cent less compared to previous year.
