Nonwovenn develops PFAS-free filters for ostomy pouches

Nonwovenn is developing PFAS-free activated carbon filter media for ostomy pouches, responding to the medical sector’s growing demand for safer, compliant, and more sustainable materials. The company’s latest development combines effective odour and gas absorption with low air resistance, efficient carbon integration, and readiness for regulatory requirements.

The initiative comes at a time when global regulatory scrutiny of PFAS is increasing. In the European Union, authorities have moved forward with a wide-ranging proposal to restrict large groups of PFAS under the REACH framework. In the United States, ostomy pouches and related accessories are classified as medical devices, placing responsibility on manufacturers for careful material selection, risk control, and regulatory compliance. PFAS-free alternatives can help companies simplify global market entry and better prepare their product portfolios for future regulations.

John Birkett, MediTech Business Director at Nonwovenn, stated that changing regulations and demographic shifts are increasing the need for next-generation ostomy care solutions. He emphasised the company’s focus on delivering high-quality PFAS-free filter media that meets both practical performance needs and regulatory expectations. He also noted that ageing populations are contributing to higher demand for ostomy care, making discreet, comfortable, and reliable pouch technology increasingly important.

Nonwovenn reports that its PFAS-free filters maintain strong adsorption and breathability. Performance has been measured against published gas and composition data, known odour factors, and clinical insights. The finished materials are available as roll goods or as cut filter inserts designed to fit standard ostomy pouch formats.
