Natural Dyeing
Researchers have published a study in the International Journal of Materials and Product Technology presenting a biopolymer-based method to improve the way natural dyes attach to textile fibres.
The new metal-free dye fixation process could make natural plant-based colours last longer on textiles while reducing the environmental impact of traditional dyeing methods. The study addresses a key challenge with natural dyes, achieving strong and long-lasting colours without using metal-based mordants or other harmful chemicals.
The new method aims to improve colour durability while maintaining the useful properties of the textile. Instead of using metal-based fixing agents, the process uses a biopolymer system. This could help reduce the release of unwanted substances into wastewater produced during textile processing.
A more efficient fixation process could help connect traditional plant-based dyeing methods with the needs of modern textile production. Better colour retention could make naturally dyed fabrics more suitable for clothing and other products that need to withstand frequent washing and regular use.
