Nanushka focuses on suitability in the luxury market

The Hungarian brand, Nanushka has launched its latest collection featuring vegan leather. The luxury fashion brand has always focused on sustainability and makes apparel that includes shirts, skirts, and jackets.

Although Faux Leather wasn’t new to Sandra Sandor, the founder of Nanushka, the options available didn’t fit the quality requirement at the time of commencement. The softness and suppleness of one fabric sample stuck out to Sandor, and she began using it in her collections.

The brand kept a low profile till 2016 and suddenly they started gaining traction. This happened as soon as the designer appointed the entrepreneur Peter Baldaszti as CEO. After having secured funding the brand finally took off. Currently, the brand has three brick-and-mortar stores in New York, Budapest, and most recently London. The last couple of years have accounted for a 15% growth rate of the company, despite the pandemic.

The brand is not completely vegan but the animal-driven fabrics are mostly recycled. The company uses regenerated leather from scraps to ensure circularity. Nanushka aims to avoid virgin sources and is working towards making all its fabrics traceable.  The founder claims that its materials have a third of the impact of conventional leather. The company is currently working on making it partially from recycled materials.

The brand has an established sustainability team that evaluates its products, and its aim is to be sustainable without compromising on quality or aesthetics. For these reasons, the company has made no made claims to use natural leather alternatives such as those made from mushrooms, apple pulp, or cactuses.

Peter Baldaszti, the CEO of Nanushka, stated that they have learnt that vegan leather was not above all and that there is a huge demand for more sustainable, more innovative fabric
