Monki unveils circular denim collection

Swedish brand Monki has become the latest brand to launch a circular denim collection as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign project.

The collection includes three all-time community favorite jeans fits, including the high waist wide leg Yoko, thin leg Monokomi, and ankle length tapered leg Taiki in the deep indigo wash, all created using the Jeans Redesign project’s circular principles.

The denim pieces are created from a more sustainably sourced blend of 20% post-consumer waste cotton and 80% in-conversion cotton to ensure durability and longevity.

The outfits, which will be available online and in select locations beginning in early August, also include bar tacks instead of traditional rivets and electroplated aluminum buttons.

Furthermore, typical polyester thread is being replaced with EcoVero thread, a blend of recycled polyester and more sustainably derived cotton. The pocket bags are made of 100% organic cotton rather than a cotton and polyester blend, making the clothing cellulosic and readily recyclable.

Monki has also begun sharing supplier information on items across monki.com, emphasizing the company’s most recent step toward a more circular future. This information contains the nation of manufacture, its locations, and the number of personnel at the manufacturing facilities.

Caroline Carlryd, Head of Design at Monki said that they’ve looked at every element and aspect of each garment in accordance with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Jeans Redesign standards. This is only the beginning of their collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to achieve H&M Group’s goal of designing all items for circularity by 2025.
