Grenoble
The high-end outdoor brand, Moncler has launched a new skiwear collection called Grenoble. It has been named after a city that lies at the foot of the French Alps.
The new collection features Moncler’s Dyneema composite fabrics from Royal DSM for the first time. The fabric has been made from Dyneema ultra-high molecular weight polyethene (UHMWPE) fibres. The brand stated that it has been fused form and function into high-performance ski wear.
In the transition from conventional fibres such as cotton and polyester, the design team has identified Dyneema as a fabric that could push the level of its skiwear’s performance to new heights.
Sandro Mandrino, the head of design for the new collection, picked Dyneema’s potential. In the year 2018, the brand had launched a programme called Moncler Genius. Under this program, the brand began working in radical co-creation with nine designers to help it build up new content. Out of these nine designers, one is Sandro Mandrino and one of the ideas he has come up with is to use Dyneema in Moncler clothing. The new collection features his ideation.
The variations of fabric in both black and white have helped the designer to merger together skiwear, space suits and technology. The designer stated that Dyneema appealed to him because it was 15 times stronger than steel, yet light enough to float on water.
In fabric form, Dyneema is available in composites, denim, knits, wovens and hybrids for composite reinforcements.
The brand DSM introduced its first bio-based UHMWPE fibre this year. The Bio-based Dyneema executes the same performance as the conventional fibre. However, it ensures a carbon footprint that is 90% lower than generic HMPE. Marcio Manique, DSM’s Protective Materials’ global business director, stated that the materials company was excited to be working with the Moncler team to launch a collection of wonderful garments that allow people to explore the outdoors more safely and for longer periods of time. He stated that they would be glad to work with Moncler in the future.
Moncler stated that the utilisation of bio-based fibre ensured the partnership would provide garments that are not only high performance and lightweight but clothes that also represent environmental sustainability that ensures a circular future.
