MCM uses vegan leather eco-friendly handbag collection

German luxury brand MCM has unveiled its first handbag collection crafted from Mirum, a plastic-free and vegan leather alternative, reflecting the brand’s shift towards more sustainable practices. This eco-conscious capsule collection marks MCM’s commitment to sustainable luxury, as expressed by chairperson Sung-Joo Kim, who stated, “MCM is the leader of a New School of Luxury where sustainability is our ultimate goal.”

Mirum, developed by biomaterials company Natural Fiber Welding (NFW), is composed entirely of natural and agricultural by-products, including natural rubber, plant oils, and minerals. This innovative material is 100% recyclable, and its production yields a significantly smaller carbon footprint—about 5% of traditional leather’s impact. The new collection took two years of design collaboration, culminating in MCM’s classic Himmel Shopper in black, available in two sizes.

This launch underscores MCM’s broader sustainable transformation, incorporating responsible materials and efficient business practices. As MCM continues to blend luxury with eco-innovation, Kim emphasized the brand’s dedication to contributing positively to society and the environment. The Mirum collection is now available at MCM retail locations worldwide.
