Marimekko and Adidas team up to create first sportswear line

Finnish design house, Marimekko will launch a new collection of sports apparel this summer in partnership with German footwear company, Adidas that combines the art of print and athletic performance.

Marimekko’s bold and vibrant designs are featured on a variety of pieces in the limited-edition collection, which are manufactured with Adidas’ distinctive performance textiles.

When it came to working, both firms prioritized sustainability. New materials, like recycled yarns, and other approaches are used in the collection to assist reduce the collection’s environmental impact.

President and CEO of Marimekko, Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, said they’re thrilled to launch their limited-edition collection with Adidas, especially in this year when Marimekko celebrates its 70th anniversary. Marimekko’s objective has been to empower people since 1951, and this collection brings that aim to life in a whole new, unexpected, but natural way.

She adds Marimekko’s bold and distinct prints are a wonderful match for Adidas’ revolutionary sportswear — this useful yet entertaining collection seeks to inspire a sense of adventure in everyday life. They hope that many individuals throughout the world will be inspired by the Adidas x Marimekko collection.

VP of design at Adidas, Josefine Aberg, said Marimekko has always been a favorite of his as a native Finn who grew up with their designs. It was natural and thrilling to cooperate with them, a company that shares the same principles of blending usefulness and elegance while employing more sustainable materials and practices.

The line, according to Aberg, blends the best of Adidas’ experience in sports performance materials and strives to stimulate everyone’s inner explorer.

The collection includes performance and lifestyle pieces such as swimwear, outerwear, training equipment, shoes, and accessories. Two classic Marimekko patterns – annika rimala’s laine (wave) and maija louekari’s räsymatto (rag rug) – will be used to create the goods.

The inaugural collection will be available from both retailers on June 1st.
