IKEA’s new textile collection is made using plastic and old jeans

Fortskrida is a recent IKEA sustainable limited-edition textile collection that is made entirely of post-consumer recycled fabrics. The collection includes pillow covers, curtains, and vivid and cheerful tablecloths.

For making 10 square meters of fabric used in the collection, 30 plastic bottles and 2 pairs of jeans were used.

The Fortskrida collection was recently introduced in the Italian market by IKEA, is dedicated to sustainability by using FERRE’s FBLUE yarns, which are made up of Recover™ post-consumer recycled denim and recycled PET bottles.

Luca Clerici of IKEA Italy, who is involved in the development of the Fortskrida collection said it’s not really easy to recycle fabrics because they’re always made up of a variety of materials, so it’s worth it if you can. They save 2,000 liters of water per kilogram of recycled cotton in comparison to fresh cotton.

He adds that PET bottles account for 45 percent of the range, while denim accounts for 55 percent. The recycled plastic reinforces the cot-ton fibers; without it, the cloth will be unable to survive everyday use.

100 Fortskrida pillow covers are made from around 12 pairs of old denim and 160 recycled one-liter PET glasses.
