Icebreaker makes progress toward its plastic-free goal

New Zealand-based natural performance apparel company Icebreaker, has updated two classic items to be made entirely of merino wool and plant-based alternatives, as part of its plastic-free by 2023 aim. The goods are part of a new seasonal collection designed to encourage customers to ‘move to natural’ and incorporate natural performance necessities into their daily lives.

The Tech Tee II and Quantum Hood III Mid Layer from Icebreaker have been revamped to be made entirely of merino wool. The same level of comfort and performance as before, but without the plastic fibers. The 15.5 Micron Base Layer and the Sonebula are two new wardrobe essentials being introduced.

Global brand president, Jan Van Mossevelde, said that since the beginning of Icebreaker 26 years ago, they’ve always looked to nature for inspiration. In order to support their objective of having entirely plastic-free fibers by 2023, they’ve had to make some difficult decisions as they’ve ‘Moved to natural.’ As they move toward their plastic-free fiber objective, redesigning some of their best-selling heritage goods to utilize 100% natural fibers was a no-brainer.

The new Quantum Hood III Mid Layer is created with 150gm jersey fabric and 100% pure merino wool, while the revised Quantum Hood III Mid Layer is made with 100% merino wool.

The new Sonebula long sleeve and matching leggings are constructed of 200gm 100% merino jersey fabric, while the 15.5 Micron Base Layer is described as the softest, warmest, and most sumptuous 100% merino base layer in the Icebreaker line.

The new additions to the current line of natural performance basics are intended for multi-use, maximum comfort, and adaptability, making them a more natural alternative for everyday performance wear.

Icebreaker’s Transparency Report released earlier this summer indicated that by 2021, 91% of the company’s overall fiber composition would be merino or plant-based, with 65% more designs produced entirely of merino or plant-based fibers.
