Hayleys Fabric, Pro Green Laboratories partner to repurpose textile waste

Hayleys Fabric PLC, Sri Lanka’s largest integrated textile manufacturer, has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with Pro Green Laboratories at the University of Moratuwa. This partnership aims to upcycle industrial waste from the textile industry and transform it into sustainable construction materials, fostering eco-conscious innovations.

The collaborative effort, launched under the FaBriEco banner, focuses on developing low-cost, eco-friendly products for the local market using dye waste, fabric waste, and fly ash generated in the textile industry. The initiative builds upon the research led by Professor Rangika U. Halwatura at Pro Green Laboratories, known for patents on sustainable products like mud concrete blocks and polymerized self-compacting mud blocks.

Hayleys Fabric’s Managing Director/CEO, Rohan Goonetilleke, sees this partnership as the initial step toward a greener future for Sri Lanka and the textile industry. By connecting their sustainability team with Pro Green Labs, the goal is to lead a shift in waste management and product development, potentially catalyzing the emergence of a circular economy.

The collaborative team, led by Professor Halwatura, plans to launch concrete blocks manufactured from dye waste, fabric waste, and fly ash generated in the textile industry. This initiative marks a departure from traditional waste management practices, aiming to treat and reuse waste as sustainable construction materials.
