Ganni partners with Bolt Threads to become virgin leather-free by 2023

Scandinavian fashion brand, Ganni, has teamed up with Bolt Threads to help it phase out its use of virgin animal leather by 2023.

Following in the footsteps of Lululemon, Adidas, and Stella McCartney, Ganni is the newest fashion brand to collaborate with Bolt Threads, a company that manufactures spider silk and leather substitute materials.

The Copenhagen-based label has previously cooperated with VEGEA, who make shoes out of a plant-based material generated in part from grape skins used in winemaking.

According to Bolt Thread, its Mylo fabric is made from mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, and mimics the “desirable properties of leather without the planetary impact associated with rearing cattle.”

Mycelium takes less than two weeks to develop compared to a year to raise a cow, according to Both Thread, and it’s collected in a state-of-the-art vertical farming facility powered entirely by renewable energy.

Dan Widmaier, CEO & Founder of Bolt Threads said, said that their objective with Mylo is to provide designers, companies, and customers an option for an animal-free alternative to classic leather that doesn’t lose quality or aesthetics. GANNI will play a key role in bringing desired Mylo items to a wider audience.

Ganni has over 20 storefronts in Europe and the United States and is sold in over 400 places throughout the world.
