FET
Fibre Extrusion Technology (FET) has introduced its new FET-500 Series of gel spinning systems, marking a major advancement in the research and development of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibres.
Based in Leeds, UK, FET is widely recognised for its expertise in medical fibre extrusion technology, providing high-performance systems for both resorbable and non-absorbable sutures. The company specialises in designing custom extrusion equipment that supports small-scale, flexible production and speeds up new product development.
The new FET-500 gel spinning systems are designed to address the challenges and provide a flexible and consistent process that can produce high-quality fibres using less than 100 grams of polymer and avoid the harsh chemicals traditionally used in gel spinning. This is achieved through a patent-pending process that employs supercritical carbon dioxide (CO₂) as an eco-friendly solvent, offering new flexibility for laboratory and pilot-scale operations.
Gel spinning typically starts with extrusion, but the washing and drawing phases determine the final yarn’s performance. FET’s unique technology replaces toxic solvents like hexane and DCM with CO₂, which effectively extracts carrier oil without harming the polymer. CO₂ is a safe, sustainable, and cost-effective solvent that dissolves oils efficiently while preserving fibre quality.
