Uniqlo owner Fast Retailing, has stated that the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has approved its targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the end of the decade.
SBTi approval indicates that their targets indicate they are in accordance with what the current climate research suggests is needed to accomplish the Paris Agreement‘s goals of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to keep it below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The SBTi has approved a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions (emissions from own operations, such as stores and main offices) by FY2030 compared to FY2019 levels.
By FY2030, the retailer aims to reduce Scope 3 GHG emissions by 20% from FY2019 levels (emissions from the production of raw materials for products, fabric production, and garment manufacturing for Uniqlo and GU products) and to reduce the proportion of electricity sourced for own operations derived from renewable energy by 100%.
Fast Retailing says it is now taking steps to minimize GHG emissions in its own operations and supply chain, based on these goals. In addition, the corporation is stepping up its efforts to attain net-zero GHG emissions by 2050.
