Cotton output estimated at 395 lakh bales in the ongoing season

Cotton crop is estimated at 395 lakh bales (170 kg each) in the ongoing season 2013-14 (started October 2013) mainly due to rise in yield against 388 bales estimated in June. as per the Cotton Association of India.

The arrivals up to June 30 were placed at 382.30 lakh bales and continue well into the off season. Arrivals in Gujarat that is India’s top cotton producer were the highest at 120 lakh bales, followed by Maharashtra at 84 lakh bales.

Production is estimated to have significantly gone up in Gujarat to 125 lakh bales in 2013-14 season, from 86.50 lakh bales in the previous year.

In Maharashtra, output is expected to rise to 85 lakh bales in 2013-14, from 78.25 lakh bales last year.

For the year 2013-14, the total cotton supply is estimated at 453.25 lakh bales, while the domestic consumption is estimated at 295 lakh bales, thus, leaving an available surplus of 158.25 lakh bales, the projected balance sheet drawn by the CAI said.

The total crop cotton output for 2012-13 season stood at 356.75 lakh bales.
