Cellulose Fibres Conference 2025 to spotlight sustainable innovations

The annual Cellulose Fibres Conference is set to make a significant return in March 2025 in Cologne, Germany, with an expanded agenda aimed at fostering a more sustainable, circular economy within the textile industry. Organized by nova-Institute, this event will serve as a key platform to explore the latest advancements and emerging trends in sustainable textile practices, featuring industry experts and researchers from around the world.

Biosynthetics, a key area of focus, are seen as a viable replacement for fossil-based fibres. Derived from renewable resources such as lactic acids, sugar beet, sugarcane, and wood, bio-based polymers present an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials. A dedicated session titled “Biosynthetics – Replacing Traditional Synthetic Fibres” will delve into recent advancements and challenges in this area, emphasizing the potential for sustainable transformation in fashion and textiles.

The conference will also tackle pressing environmental concerns, including fibre-to-fibre recycling—a promising strategy to reduce waste and resource consumption. With the textile industry under increasing pressure to meet EU climate targets, a focused session will highlight innovations in recycling and explore the obstacles to implementing a fully circular textile economy.

Another critical issue to be addressed is the impact of microplastics from synthetic fibres on marine ecosystems. A special session will explore the factors influencing fibre degradation in marine environments and assess the role of biodegradable fibres in mitigating pollution. Experts from leading research institutes will present strategies for preventing microplastic pollution and advancing naturally degradable fibres.
