Canada plans to import local Swazi textiles

Swaziland has suffered a setback after the recent announcement made by United States of America President Barack Obama on the suspension of Swaziland from the Africa Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The Canadian government is planning to explore new avenues to establish market place for the local textile industry of Swaziland.

Shawn Barber, the High Commissioner of Canada to Swaziland, when presenting his letter of credence to His Majesty King Mswati III at the Lozitha Royal Palace, said the textile industry, which employs approximately 20 000 people, will be greatly affected by the suspension.

Using Canada Fund for local initiatives they are working with the local textile associations to bring a Canadian expert to Swaziland in the next several months to provide advice and guidance on exporting Swazi textiles to the Canadian marketplace.

They hope to replicate this type of assistance for Swazi exporters again next year, Barber said.

His Majesty King Mswati III has agreed to the fact that both countries would benefit from the bilateral trade.
