Brain Biotech, AMSilk register patent for spider silk protein

Biological solutions company Brain Biotech AG and advanced spider silk material firm AMSilk GmbH have achieved a significant milestone by registering a patent after optimizing a natural structural protein for performance materials. This collaborative effort aims to create high-performance protein-based fibers suitable for various applications in the textile industry.

The partnership between Brain Biotech and AMSilk focuses on harnessing the potential of spider silk to develop sustainable textile solutions. Through their cooperative endeavor, they have successfully registered a Patent Cooperation Treaty, highlighting the promise of spider silk in addressing challenges within the textile industry.

The success of the partnership is attributed to Brain Biotech’s technology, which enables the modification of structural proteins at the amino acid level. Dr. Alexander Pelzer, head of research & development at Brain Biotech, explained that their achievement in rational protein engineering is the result of combining the team’s expertise with advanced bioinformatics methods, including AI predictions. He emphasized that the strategic partnership with AMSilk exemplifies the effectiveness of their protein engineering pipeline.

Pelzer further elaborated that Brain Biotech’s team utilizes their extensive knowledge and AI-driven techniques to implement recommended optimizations before scaling up production for application testing. This approach ensures the practical implementation of their research findings and facilitates the development of innovative solutions for the textile industry.
