BMW x Bcomp
BMW Group is set to begin using flax-based composite materials in the production of future vehicle models, marking a significant step toward more sustainable automotive manufacturing. These natural fibre composites, developed by Swiss company Bcomp, will be featured in both interior and exterior parts of upcoming cars.
This development is a major achievement in the long-standing collaboration between BMW and Bcomp. The two companies have spent years working together to test and refine these materials, including successful trials in racing environments where performance and durability are crucial. The new composites are designed to replace components traditionally made from carbon fibre.
One of the key applications will be the roof of the next-generation BMW M3, which will use Bcomp’s natural fibre technology. This innovation is expected to cut CO₂ emissions during production by about 40% compared to conventional carbon fibre parts, while also offering better options for disposal at the end of the vehicle’s life.
BMW and Bcomp have also created a unique natural fibre weave and colour specifically tailored to meet the high technical and aesthetic standards required for automotive roof components. The public has already seen this sustainable material in use, featured in the award-winning BMW M Visionary Materials Seat project.
