BGMEA receives award for sustainability work

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has been honored with the Green Leadership Award 2021 for its outstanding leadership in establishing Bangladesh as the world’s largest producer of green garments.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan received the award in a Dhaka event organized by GreenTech Foundation Bangladesh in partnership with Bangladesh Bank’s Sustainable Finance Division.

According to a news release, Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin was the chief guest at the award event.

For their contributions to the environment, transition to a modern, resource-efficient, and inclusive economy, a total of ten sustainable, innovative, and inclusive business ideas and startups were awarded.

Vintage Denim Studio Limited is one of Bangladesh’s first green garment companies to receive the award.

Faruque Hassan, President of the BGMEA, expressed gratitude for the award, which recognizes BGMEA’s and the RMG sector’s achievements in green industrialization. He said that sustainability is a marathon, not a sprint. They’re committed to continuing the environmental sustainability that they have achieved so far.

In the garment sector, he also invited creative and sustainable business concepts.

The USGBC has recognized 155 enterprises in Bangladesh as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). There are 46 LEED platinum units and 95 LEED gold units among them. More than 500 factories are in the process of becoming LEED certified.

The BGMEA signed the UN Fashion Industry Charter with the goal of reducing GHG emissions by 30% by 2030.
