Better Cotton
Southern Chad is now the focus of the nonprofit organization Better Cotton, which advocates for and instructs better standards in cotton farming.
The organization has signed collaborations with Cotontchad, an agribusiness firm that works with smallholder farmers in the southern region of Chad, and IDH, an organization that promotes sustainable trade initiatives.
In order to take part in the “landscape approach,” which has been developed with local stakeholders in Chad in collaboration with IDH, Better Cotton has signed a multi-stakeholder Letter of Intent.
They will collaborate to develop and put into action a regional development strategy based on the Production – Protection – Inclusion (PPI) landscape approach developed by IDH.
Through the promotion and support of sustainable production systems, inclusive land use planning and management, and the protection and regeneration of natural resources, the strategy seeks to “produce beneficial impacts for farmers and the environment.”
In order to start a Better Cotton Program in Chad, CotontChad is now participating in the Better Cotton New Country Start Up Process with the assistance of IDH.
Thousands of smallholder cotton farmers in southern Chad are anticipated to use the Better Cotton Standard System (BCSS) in their farming operations.
Lisa Barratt, Africa operations manager at Better Cotton, said that they are extremely eager to start this process with IDH and CotontChad. Sustainable cotton is more popular than ever. Customers want to know what commitments companies and merchants are making to safeguard social responsibility, minimize the consequences of climate change, and protect the environment. By expanding into new markets and fostering greater international collaboration, we seek to ensure the resiliency and longevity of the cotton industry in Chad while also having a good effect on the ground.
