Studio Alcova
Milan-based design studio Alcova has developed trends incorporating technical performance into home products under the theme “Home-Maxxing – The Performance of Everyday Living”. They explore the growing influence of a culture where activities such as sleep, fitness and personal wellbeing are increasingly measured and improved through technology. This was presented at the Heimtextil Trends 27/28 online preview held on September 7.
Alcova has identified a growing interest in more traditional and physical experiences. Consumers are drawn to tactile materials, visible construction and products that show how they are made and naturally change with age. The brand has developed three unique product ranges exploring multiple aspects of this concept.
Technical features are increasingly being shown instead of hidden. Technical graphics, fastenings, labels and information similar to product specifications are becoming part of the visual design of furniture and home textiles. Technical information is also becoming a decorative element. Codes, numbers, symbols and large labels are sometimes used for their visual appearance rather than their original practical purpose.
Another direction focuses on physical qualities that cannot easily be shown on a screen or measured through performance data, including touch, texture, smell, ageing and imperfections. Natural fibres and materials such as wool, leather and wood-based textiles are important in this direction. Fabrics that change through use and develop creases, patina and other signs of ageing are also highlighted.
