PREFACE
The “World Fibre & Malaysia – Trends in Demand and Supply” is the Fifth compendium from YarnsandFibers covering the trends in global demand and supply of textile fi-bre/filament industry. In this Report we have assesses the impact of the Global Slowdown on textile fi-bre/filament industry including natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country performed in this scenario. The analysis assesses the positions of fibres/filaments industry as events unfolded. The evolution of Global Slowdown and its spread across the world has been critically documented in perspective of textile industry. The demand crunch began in mid-2008 and continued into 2009. Also documented are the ap-proaches of developed countries and the stimulus packages announced by various gov-ernments.
HIGHLIGHTS
Malaysia was the fifteenth largest producer of fibre/filament in 2008 and ninth largest in Asian region. Its mainstay has been the polyester industry. Of the 325,000 tons of manmade fibres/filament produced in 2008, about 235,000 tons has been in filament form and 65,000 tons in staple fibres. The only other manmade fibre Malaysia produces is nylon. In 2008, 25,000 tons of nylon filament yarn was produced. In production of manmade fibres Malaysia accounts for 0.8% of World’s manmade fibre production. In polyester filament yarns, it has a share of 1.3%. It is the ninth largest producer of polyester filament yarn and almost this is exported making Malaysia the fourth largest exporter in 2008. It was at distinct ninth in export of polyester staple fibre. Of late, it has been retaining some portion of polyester filament for domestic consumption. Malaysia is not a major consumer of any textile fi-bre/filament.
