The Mzannar family’s 300-year-old textile business survived Lebanon’s civil war by making uniforms for militiamen. But its business savvy was no match for years of economic malaise that followed and it has now shut its factory.

The head of Lebanon’s chamber of commerce chief said last year nearly 2,200 businesses had closed, warning that more would collapse. And while there is dispute over those numbers, Lebanese mostly agree the economy is in dire shape.

Prize for Pet/Polyester 'Upcycling' technology

Related Keywords: acronym PET, depolymerization technique, PET/polyester plastics, polymers, synthetic polymer source, Textiles

Luxemborg
Summary:
Getting Gr3n pitch perfect - It was clear that we were in for a high octane performance when Dr Maurizio Crippa took to the stage to pitch Gr3n (pronounced ‘green’), as he immediately asked the audience to raise their hands if they had never used a backpack or bought a T-shirt. Needless to say, no hands went up. Dr Crippa’s point was that PET/polyester plastics are ubiquitous in the manufacture of, as he put it, ‘containers for food and drinks, as well as for people’. Deriving from the same synthetic polymer source, the acronym PET is ascribed to its use in packaging (such as bottles), whereas the term ‘polyester’ denotes its use in textiles.

The beauty that comes out of this artistic choice is a kaleidoscopic game of colours and the creation, at the same time, of a pattern which cannot be controlled.”
