Parkdale mills to expand its Mountain City operations

Parkdale Mills, a leader in the spun yarn industry plans to expand its Mountain City operations making it the company’s largest ring spinning installation will be investing to the tune of $120 million. The expansion will include replacing all existing manufacturing equipment and increasing the facility size. Construction will begin immediately with plans for new technology and equipment to be installed in July 2015.

Venus Group, a California-based manufacturer that makes linens, aprons, uniforms, towels and health care items will be investing $2.5 million to open a facility at 5918 Lancaster Highway, Fort Lawn in Chester County. This will bring textile manufacturing and as many as 25 jobs back to Chester County.

The Venus Group has three business units which target different segments of the market.

The Venus Institution caters to linen rental companies, health care and other related industries. Venus Home Fashion is the retail arm of the company.

Vietnam garment and textile exports witnessed 1.2pc growth in Jan

Vietnam garment and textile export turnover witnessed 1.2 percent growth in the month of January over the same month last year to reach US$1.9 billion, according to Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association.

The production output of garment and textile products such as fabric and clothes have been on the rise compared to the same period last year as many businesses have got orders to produce until the end of the first quarter this year and even the second quarter to some.

Adoni and Yemmiganur towns of Andhra Pradesh have a long history of textile trade and manufacturing. Tajik cotton farmers focusing on increasing its cotton yields for which they are trying out more productive foreign seeds, even as it reduces the acreage devoted to the water-intensive crop.

In the interest of crop diversity and due to ecological concerns, the country's farmers have reduced the farmland planted under cotton by more than 26,000ha to 177,624ha between 2011 and 2014. Over the same period, nationwide cotton production dropped from 415,000 tonnes to 372,000 tonnes per year.

Rising labour costs in 2014 pushes global sourcing costs to increase

2014 saw more wage strikes, resulting hikes and general unrest among workers when rates were not sufficiently raised. But despite discontent among the workforce, wages are up worldwide and labour will be costlier in 2015. However, experts predict that lower costs of inputs, like cotton, which has hit five-year lows in pricing, could partially offset the increase in labour rates.

Zimbabwe cotton also known as the white gold had economically uplifted places such as the hot and semi-arid marginalized areas like Gokwe in the Midlands Province. Besides bringing in the much needed foreign currency, the textile, oil-pressing and stock feed industries also benefitted from cotton production in Zimbabwe. But today, the nation cannot talk of a 2015 cotton crop because there is no cotton crop to talk about.

Vietnam becomes largest Southeast Asian exporters to US on back of textiles

Surpassing Malaysia and Thailand, Vietnam has become the largest exporter to the United States in the Southeast Asian region with a record trade surplus of almost US$25 billion (S$34 billion) in 2014. According to the US Census Bureau data, trade between the two countries reached US$36.3 billion, of which, Vietnam exported US$30.6 billion worth of goods to the US while it imported goods worth only US$5.7 billion. In 2014, exports were up 24 per cent while imports increased 13.6 per cent compared with the previous year.
