Tirupur knitwear-dominated industry take its first step towards diversification of the knitwear capital from cotton to jute products. The National Jute Board (NJB) in collaboration with NIFT-TEA College of Knitwear Fashion offered the 49-day training for 20 people, who are now equipped with knowledge of making 25 different jute products. The first batch of trainees has just completed their training in jute product manufacturing.

Aggressive buying of quality lint by spinners was witnessed at cotton market on Friday keeping trading activity brisk. A broker said that the rush could be due to the latest cotton production figures which have shown a sudden dip in phutti arrival of phutti (seed cotton).

Apparently, spinners are not willing to take any risks and readily entered into deals even at higher rates. A salient feature of cotton trading was that most deals were of good quality, big lots.

The Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) charge a market cess of 1.25% of the value of the cotton brought to the market. If the value of cotton is Rs 4,500 then the cess comes upto Rs 50 which is not logical at all. The members of the Cotton Association of India (CAI) and Maharashtra Cotton Ginners Association ( MCGA) met chief minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking the removal of Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) fees.

China alarmed at rapid expansion of silk industry, the government is now making an effort to tap the potential of indigenous silk portfolios in the North East of India. As China produces close to 1 lakh tonne of mulberry silk every year.

India is the second largest silk producer in the world after China but the difference is just huge. But with an investment close to Rs 700 crore, 24 projects in the North East, including two in Meghalaya, would help the government meet the national raw silk production target.
