Cotton trading activity remained dreary due to unrest in the city because of a sit-in by a religious organisation, owing to fear the brokers also did not turn up. There was thin attendance in the trading ring which kept proceedings listless.

The spot rates stood unchanged at the previous levels of Rs6,600/maund (37.324kg) and Rs7,073/40kg. Ex-Karachi rates also remained firm at Rs6,745/maund and Rs7,228/40kg after an addition of Rs145 and Rs155 as upcountry expenses, respectively.

Oklahoma to see 555,000 acres of cotton harvested in 2017 season, up from 290,000 acres in 2016 and 205,000 acres in 2015 due to alternative crop prices, cotton acreage has been ramping up, said Randy Boman, Oklahoma State University Southwest Research and Extension Center director and OSU Cooperative Extension cotton program leader.

According to the USDA November Crop Production Report indicates Oklahoma is now the nation’s fourth-leading producer of cotton with an estimated crop of 1.1 million bales. Last year’s crop was 617,000 bales. Oklahoma ginned 374,000 bales of cotton in 2015.

The textile industry in and around Coimbatore, Tirupur, Karur and part of Bengaluru was facing shortage of labour, particularly skilled workers, which at any given time requires three lakh to five lakh workers, a board member of Indian Texpreneurs Federation (ITF) Srihari Balakrishnan said.

He was speaking at a function organized to distribute certificates and appointment orders in ITF member mills trained under Skill Development Programme.

A debate has stirred up between the Government of Nigeria and the Nigerian Textile Manufacturing Association (NTMA) on the export of cotton from the country.

MTMA’s acting director general Hamman Kwajaffa said at a public hearing organized by a parliamentary committee on industry that it wants a ban on the export of cotton from the country as it is needed for local manufacturing.
