The Bangladesh government to bring in discipline and ensure accountability among the buying houses in the export-oriented apparel industry is set to frame a policy. Draft has already been prepared by the commerce ministry and sent to stake holders for vetting last month. According to the draft that seeks to get buying houses registered with the Export Promotion Bureau states that without registration with the EPB, no buying house will be able to hand over letters of credit on behalf of buyers to manufacturers.

Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB&I) has been awarded a contract by Samsung Engineering (Thailand) Co Ltd, for a brownfield ethylene plant at PTT Global Chemical’s (PTTGC) petrochemicals complex in Map Ta Phut, Rayong, Thailand. The contract valued in excess of $95 million.

The plant will use latest generation ethylene technology of CB&I, a technology and infrastructure provider for the energy industry.

Blended yarn prices remain range-bound in Asia

In China, offers for PC yarn were stable in the first week of February while that of PV yarn were firm during the week.

In India, PC yarn offers were assessed unchanged during the week while PV yarn prices also remained range-bound despite rising polyester fibre cost. 30s (65/35) PV warp yarns prices were stable while PC 30s (52/48) prices were up INR1 a kg in Ludhiana.

In Pakistan, poly-cotton prices rolled over on the back of strong prices in raw material market while poly-viscose prices were steady during the week.

Indian apparel export in January this year witnessed decline by 14 percent in rupee and 8 percent in dollar terms compared with the year earlier month, as per latest official data. The sharp fall in the exports of cotton textile by 16 percent year-on-year, apparel by about 14 percent year-on-year and man-made textiles by 7 per cent year-on-year contributed to the sub-optimum performance.
