Weavers express concern over fluctuation in pure silk thread price as it is affecting the industry. According to weavers, the shop owners reduce orders when the silk threads price increase as they get fewer customers when they price the saris higher.

But business appears to be normal in silk sari shops at Chinthamaniyur, Semmandapatty and Panchukalipatty villages in Salem district.

Indian textiles minister Smriti Irani at the investor’s summit that concluded in state capital Lucknow on February 22, announced a proposal to jointly set up a yarn depot with the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government to give a further boost to the textile sector in the state, which garnered proposals worth Rs 7,000 crore.

The proposal to set up yarn depot in UP is through which weavers can directly purchase yarn at subsidised rates, as subsidies hardly reached weavers, a top Indian newspaper quoted the minister as telling the summit.

As textile mills increasingly prefer to buy cotton from the U.S. in larger quantities. According to trade and industry sources, cotton imports this season might surpass the official estimate of 17 lakh bales.

Also, the units could get a 4 to 5% cost advantage, the sources added. Total imports during the last cotton season (2016-2017) were 30.94 lakh bales and the previous year it was 22.79 lakh bales. The total imports this season (October 2017 to September 2018) might cross 20 lakh bales, said Nishanth Asher, a partner with cotton trading firm RS Asher and Company.

Conditions at cotton market on Thursday remained steady as buyers kept looking for quality lots and strong demand for quality lint from spinners who strived to build up their inventories. However, shortage of quality lint disappointed many.

With the current cotton season (2017-18) fast nearing its end, some panic was seen among spinners who were still short of cotton stocks.

The issue of shortage is primarily related to small spinners who were unable to import cotton to meet their seasonal demand, brokers said.
