The wool industry looking for a big break in the outdoor recreation clothing market is likely to get success due to the technology originally developed to make fine wool finer.

The Optim technology behind the new fabric was originally developed more than 20 years ago when the world was desperate for more fine wool, prompting the then UK-based International Wool Secretariat (IWS) and various textile processors to look at stretching woollen fibres in the early processing stage.

Wool prices to hold their ground going into new wool selling season
Summary:
New Zealand wool exports has witnessed drop in volume during the past year but the prices for cross-bred wool have risen. The indicator price for coarse cross-bred wool, which makes up about 70 percent of the New Zealand clip, rose by 9 percent to $5.12 per kilogram regardless of the depreciation effect of a stronger New Zealand dollar on export returns.

The country's biggest wool exporter New Zealand Wool Services International Ltd, is expecting wool prices to hold their ground going into the new wool selling season but much depended on the currency.

According to New Zealand Wool Services International general manager John Dawson, more than half of New Zealand's wool exports have gone to China and the new uses China is finding for carpet-style wool has lead to rise in coarse wool prices.

Limited supplies of New Zealand wool is helping to keep auction prices on the boil at the first sales of the New Year.

The shortage led to the first South Island sale of the year being cancelled.
