What are the various types of wool?

< All Topics

The wool is categorised into three types on the basis of source:
• Sheared wool/fleece: The wool that is obtained from the live domesticated animal bred for wool.
• Pulled wool: The hair fiber procured from the skin of a dead animal is referred to as pulled wool. The wool so obtained is inferior in quality, less elastic and lustrous than the sheared wool.
• Lamb’s wool: This wool has a soft, fine, extremely warm and natural tip and is collected from the lamb.

Other varieties of wool include:
• Virgin wool: It is fresh, unused wool procured from sheep or is wool removed from lamb as his first shearing.
• Recycled wool: It is the wool that is already used and could be obtained from the worn clothing or from unused scrap. The wool from worn clothes is processed back to fiber stage followed by formation of yarns and finally converted into fabric. The quality of recycled wool is inferior and is available at a very cheap price.
