DMT ( Dimethyl Terephthalate)
The Dimethyl Terephthalate (DMT), an intermediate for polyester, is produced at Adana plant. The plant was started with a capacity of 60,000 tonnes in May 1977 under license from Hls AG, Marl Germany. In October 1991, the capacity was increased to 1,20,000 tonnes per annum, and finally, in September 1998, it was expanded to 2,40,000 tonnes per annum.
Projects such as Residue, Waste Water treatment and a Vent Washing system have been implemented to increase the yield of raw materials (P-Xylene, Methanol).
As for environmental implications, the residue is treated in the Catalyst Recovery System, before going to the Boiler House for incineration. This is done to recover catalysts and prevent leaching heavy metals to the environment. Waste water collected from the system is treated by an anaerobic treatment in a waste water plant serving all of SASA.
Industrially DMT (Dimethyl Terephthalate
) was commonly used to produce polyester fibre until late 80's, but because of feedstock flexibility, terephthalic acid (PTA) increased its market share as a substitute intermediate of polyester fibre in the late 80's. However, DMT is still important in the manufacture of some of the chemicals as follows:
- Polyester film (support base for photosensitive emulsions in X -ray film, graphic art film, base for magnetic media including videotape, computer tape, floppy disks etc. and flexible packaging),
- Polybutylene terephthalate, pet engineering resins (automotive applications, electrical, electronic, industrial, machinery components and parts, alloys, blends),
- Cyclohexanedimethanol (thermoformed food containers, jars, bottles and medical packaging),
- Polycyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate (electronic connectors, surface mount
technology),
- Copolyester-eter elastomer (automotive applications)
- Dioctyl terephthalate plasticizers (flexible PVC plastics) and.
- Bottle grade polymer resin production.

PET Bottles
PET Bottles are produced by DuPontSA at its plants at Adana, Bursa, Izmir, Silivri.
PET Resin
(Poly Ethylene Terephthalate)
PET Resin is produced at Adana and Wilton. There has been rapid growth and development in the PET bottle market since the introduction of the first single-piece bottles.
New demands have been made on
the resin, triggering the development of new Melinar grades. DuPontSA
Melinar containers are light, crystal clear and virtually unbreakable and
Melinar Laser+ is the latest in the new generation of polymers.
Blowing machines have increased dramatically in size and speed over the past
few years. Both the number of moulds per machine and the number of bottles
blown per mould per hour has increased. New demands have been placed on
machines by new bottle sizes and shapes, such as contour and single serve
bottles. Lightweighting has also been a major development. Consequently, there
has been an increase in the performance required of the polymer. Melinar
Laser+ has been designed to meet the requirements of the latest machines in the
most demanding applications. At the same time, performance on earlier machines
has been improved to ensure that optimum productivity is achieved.
DuPontSA also produce Melinar Glaze, a food grade PET formulated to give
optimum performance in extrusion coating of paper and cardboard and the
extrusion of thin sheet.
Melinar Eclat is special slow crystallising grade of PET formulated for
conversion by conventional single stage processing to very high quality cosmetic
containers where high optical clarity consistent with thick walls is a prime
requirement.

POY
DuPontSA produces POY at Adana
and Garforth.
PTA (Purified Terephthalic Acid)
Man-made fibre, films and lightweight bottles are part of a huge range of products
that we take for granted as part of modern life, and all contain polyester, derived
from purified terephthalic acid (PTA).
Purified Terephthalic Acid is
produced at Wilton plant.
DuPontSA's PTA is used as the basis of Melinar the company's own
formulated polyester polymer and is also sold to other manufacturers around the
world.
Solvent-free powder coatings based on PTA are used in a wide range of
applications where excellent weathering and corrosion resistance is required, for
example garden furniture, outdoor equipment and car parts. In shoe
manufacturing, car assembly and lamination, PTA is used to make light coloured,
immensely strong glues.
Polyester is used in many products that come into direct contact with our body
and our food. This means that the quality of polyester raw materials, and in
particular PTA, is critical. Any impurities could cause taste or smell problems,
fibre spinning breakdowns and colour differences. DuPontSA's PTA is
manufactured to world class quality standards and all aspects of the operation are
controlled under a quality assurance system which, in 1998, was among the first
to be certificated to IS09002. Though DuPontSA's PTA is more than 99.98%
pure, the company is continually working to improve purity and consistency even
further. This ongoing programme includes use of quality methods such as
statistical process control (SPC) and statistical quality control (SQC) to reduce
product variability and processing costs.
