University of Calcutta has developed genetically modified (GM) jute. The genetic modification by gene sequencing can produce the required quality and varieties of jute like the longer fibres and different colours. The GM jute has been forwarded to the regulator, Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) for commercial approval.

GM jute will become the second crop of its kind to get approval, after the GM cotton which was approved in 2002 for commercialization

Pakistan local cotton markets witnessed sluggish trading activities due to low demand and also due cotton season ending in the country. Only two trading stations of the dozens trading stations in the country reported trade in the commodity in the last 48 hours, said a broker at the Karachi Cotton Exchange.

According to the Karachi Cotton Association (KCA) report, traders at the two stations, Ghotki and Rahim Yar Khan exchanged as many as 1,200 bales (155 kilograms) at Rs5,800 to Rs6,500 per maund (37.324 kilograms).
