The newly announced trade policy would serve as a booster to the existing export industry, said Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) President Mian Humayun Parvez on Friday.

He said that despite immense potential, the South and Central Asian regions are among the least integrated regions of the world. It was encouraging that the government targeted key markets like Iran, China, Afghanistan and European Union.

Bangladesh government is actively considering lifting its ban on raw jute export due to adequate supply of the fibre in domestic market. Hopefully, the restriction will go from the first week of April, said Joint secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute (MoTJ) Nasima Begum.

However, private jute millers expressed their concern over the fresh move of the government to withdraw the export ban as they will face difficulties to meet the local demand. They said that the raw jute prices will go up if ban is withdrawn.

Holi festival kept trading activity on the cotton market on Thursday came under pressure as many participants busy in Holi celebrations. Dealers said the trade activity may revive after Holi festival.

In the ready business, around 4,000 bales of cotton changed hands between Rs 4300-5500, while, in Sindh, seed cotton prices were at Rs 2000-2200, and in Punjab prices at Rs 2500 and Rs 2900.

The official spot rate was unchanged at Rs 5,250, dealers said.

In a bid to promote khadi culture, Air India has agreed to go for a makeover of its Air India One cabin crew members who will wear khadi silk clothes supplied by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Women cabin crew will wear khadi silk saree, their men counterpart will wear jodhpuri suit, also known as bandhgala suit, and trousers.

Air India One is a VVIP charter by Air India that carries the Prime Minister, the President or the Vice President on their international tours.

The declining cotton prices worldwide have kept Bangladesh yarn market stable in the last one year. About a year ago, cotton was traded at nearly $1 a pound in the global market when yarn was sold for $3.3 to $3.4 a kg in Bangladesh.

Momin Mondol, managing director of Mondol Group, one of the leading garment exporters of Bangladesh said that the domestic yarn market is stable now as the cotton prices declined worldwide.

Buying of cheaper cotton yarn by fabric and garmenting units located in Ludhiana and Gurgaon from other parts of India had hit local units due to high value added tax (VAT). The tax concessions announced by the governments of Punjab and Haryana in the 2016-17 budget proposals for the cotton spinning sector will help languishing units.

Punjab has 165 spinning mills with 4.25 million active spindles, and consumes 650,000-700,000 bales (a bale is 170 kg) annually. The Punjab government has said the VAT rate on cotton spinning will be 3.63 per cent, from the earlier 6.05 per cent.
